Ikhtisar

Every Sunday, the program moderator interviews newsmakers on current political and socio-economic issues, and provides short, topical comments at the end of the broadcast. The program is generally broadcast from the CBS News bureau in Washington, D.C. Guests include government leaders, politicians, and international personalities in the news. CBS News correspondents and other contributors often involve guests in roundtable discussions that focus on the current topic.

The program has been hosted by ten moderators to date, starting with Bill Shadel. The current moderator, Margaret Brennan has been the host since February 2018.

The program is broadcast live at 10:30 am Eastern Time/9:30 Central Time (immediately after CBS News Sunday Morning ). Most CBS affiliates at Pacific Time Zone aired at 8:30 am local time, which served as an introduction to NFL Today during the fall. Local affiliates are free to show the event when they choose, usually before noon local time.

The pending audio broadcast of the program is also conducted on a handful of radio affiliates through CBS Radio Network, and in the afternoon on the Washington-area C-SPAN WCSP-FM radio station (which is also easily accessible online nationwide); the program is also broadcasted on a half-hour delay at CBSN CBS News Internet service.

In 2017, Face the Nation is the most watched public Sunday event with an average of 3.538 million viewers. However, this event attracts an older audience compared to NBC's Meet the Press competitors who receive, on average, more viewers between the ages of 25-54.

History

Face the Nation aired on November 7, 1954, and was initially broadcast on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 pm. Eastern time. The original host of the program was Bill Shadel, then the Washington bureau chief for D.C. for CBS News. On that first program, the guest was Wisconsin senator Joseph McCarthy.

In July 2011, Face the Nation became a talk show last Sunday morning to start broadcasting in high definition (leaving only news programs last night CBS Up To Minutes as the only American news programs on major broadcast networks and cable news channels that continue to broadcast in standard definition, until converted to HD by the end of November 2012). Other major changes come to the show in December 2011 when they permanently extend the broadcast for half an hour to an hour. The move comes after the Competition Facing Nation , Meet Press, This Week on ABC, and Fox News Sunday on Fox all extend their program up to an hour. The delay comes from disputes between CBS affiliate channels.

In 2015, Bob Schieffer, the longest moderator in the history of the show, retires after 24 years at the table. He was replaced by John Dickerson on June 7, 2015.

On February 22, 2018, CBS announced Margaret Brennan as the new host, replacing John Dickerson who served as moderator for less than three years. Brennan was just the host of the second woman in the history of the program.

Under Bob Schieffer

In 1991, Bob Schieffer took over as moderator for Lesley Stahl who held that position for eight years. Under Schieffer, ratings are on the rise and the show extends the half-hour period to one full hour. Ratings jumped to more than 3 million viewers every Sunday, as Face the Nation exceeded all competitors in the rankings. Schieffer won many awards with performances, including two Emmys for the Leading News Discussion & amp; Analysis, Edward R. Murrow Award, and Overseas Press Club Awards.

Program duration

The program runs 30 minutes for most of its history. This is expanded to 60 minutes for the initial 20-week period in April 2012 and is extended to that time period permanently on July 29, 2012. There is a deliberate pause between the first and second half of the program, to allow local affiliates to start running other programs if they want to do it.

About 81% of CBS-affiliated stations aired the second half hour alongside the first; the rest either did not broadcast the second half hour at all or air part of the program on a pending recording basis, due to station commitments to other programs (especially NFL pregame events produced on stations leading to NFL Today , along with commitment of E/I and advertorial or outdoor programming). Other stations choose to air the second half hour after primetime after their local news releases are delayed or in next time slots as part of their late night schedule, although the number of stations carrying the full clock in the pattern has increased over time with the end of the former commitment on 2017, from 64% in 2012.

Face the Nation is the last Sunday public affairs event to extend its length to one full hour. The move is done as a way to draw viewers away from competitors.
