Wix.com Ltd. is Israel's cloud-based web development platform first developed and popularized by Israeli companies also called Wix. This allows users to create HTML5 websites and mobile sites through the use of online drag and drop tools. Users can add functions such as social plug-ins, e-commerce, online marketing, contact forms, email marketing, and community forums to their websites using various applications developed by Wix and third parties.
Wix is ââbuilt with a freemium business model, earning revenue through premium quality enhancements. Users must purchase a premium package to link their site to their own domain, remove Wix ads, add e-commerce capabilities, or purchase extra storage and data bandwidth. Histori
Wix was founded in 2006 by Israeli developer Avishai Abrahami, Nadav Abrahami and Giora Kaplan. The company, headquartered in Tel Aviv, with offices in Be'er-Sheva, San Francisco, New York City, Dnipro, Kiev and Vilnius, is supported by Insight Venture Partners, Mangrove Capital Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners and Benchmark Capital.
The company entered an open beta phase in 2007 using the Adobe Flash-based platform.
In April 2010, Wix had 3.5 million users and raised $ 10 million in Series C funding provided by Benchmark Capital and existing investors Bessemer Venture Partners and Mangrove Capital Partners. In March 2011, Wix had 8.5 million users and raised $ 40 million in Series D funding, bringing its total financing to $ 61 million. The app market
In October 2012, Wix launched an app market for users to sell applications made with the company's automated web development technology. The Wix software development tool lets app developers create and offer web apps to millions of Wix users around the world. Wix App Market offers free and subscription-based apps, with revenue sharing of 70 percent for developers and 30 percent for Wix. The app market allows customers to integrate third-party applications into their own websites, such as photo feeds, blogging, music playlists, online communities, email marketing, and file management. Various apps are offered from providers like Google, Instagram, LiveChat, Shopify, and Ecwid.
On May 15, 2014, Wix announced the "WixHive API", which allows any Wix apps installed in the user's website to retrieve and share their visitor data (such as contact information, messages, purchases and bookings) with other installed applications on the same web site. By sharing data, it gives Wix users more actionable information about the behavior of their visitors and can help grow the business.
Other services
In August 2014, Wix launched Wix Hotels, booking systems for hotels, inns and breakfasts, and vacation rentals using the Wix website. This was followed in 2015 by Wix Music, a platform for independent musicians to market and sell their music. and Wix Restaurants in 2016.
Acquisitions
- Appixia, the platform developer for building the "mCommerce" app, was acquired in March 2014.

Controversy
In October 2016, there was controversy over the use of WPL-licensed WordPress code by Wix. In response, Avishai Abrahami, CEO of Wix, publishes answers that explain which open source code is used and how Wix collaborates with the open source community. However, it was later noted that collaboration with the open source community was not sufficient under the terms of the GPL license, which required any code built on GPL licensed code to be released under the same license.
