Emotional isolation is an isolation state in which a person may have a functioning social network but still feel emotionally detached from others.

Population-based studies show that one in five middle-aged and elderly (50-80 years) men in Sweden are emotionally isolated (defined as having no one to vent). Of those who have someone where they can vent, eight out of ten vent only in their spouses. People who do not have anyone to talk tend not to feel alert and strong, calm, energetic and happy. Instead, they are more likely to feel depressed, sad, tired and tired. Many people who suffer from this kind of isolation have a strong social network, but do not have significant ties with their friends. Although they can build a superficial friendship, they often can not vent to many people. Emotionally isolated people usually feel lonely and can not relate to others.

Emotional abuse/abuse of children and adolescents has existed since antiquity (Beswick, 2009; Mause, 1974). This has garnered considerable public debate and remains focused on researchers. The identification, assessment, and treatment of emotional abuse is very important for counselors, psychologists, health professionals and even parents. Empirical information has shown that emotional abuse, especially among children, exists in developed and developing countries. In America, the rate of emotional abuse is estimated to be 103 per 1000 among children aged 2-17 years (Finkelhor et al., 2005). A 2-year study of cases of emotional abuse by Jellen et al. (2001) revealed that major emotional abuse was found in 26% of cases while emotional abuse plus physical abuse or child abuse were found in 14% of cases.

Identify emotional abuse

The study of the identification of emotional abuse has shown that it is multidimensional. Warner and Hansen (1994) affirm that identification and reporting of persecution are two important steps in improving the health status of abused children. Garbarino et al. (1986) in Iwaniec (1997) and Tomison and Tucci (1997) proposed five categories of emotional abuse to include rejection (a behavior that is a child's neglect); isolate (behaviors that prevent children from participating in social activities); terrorizing (behavior that threatens children with severe punishment); ignore (the behavior that makes the caregiver psychologically unavailable to the child); and destructive (behaviors that encourage children to develop antisocial behavior patterns).

In relationship

Emotional isolation can occur as a result of social isolation, or when a person does not have a close confidant or an intimate partner. Although relationships are needed for well-being, they can trigger negative feelings and thoughts and emotional isolation can act as a defense mechanism to protect a person from emotional distress. When people are emotionally isolated, they keep their feelings completely to themselves, unable to receive emotional support from others, feel "closed" or numb, and are reluctant or unwilling to communicate with others, except perhaps for things that most shallow. Emotional isolation can occur in intimate relationships, especially as a result of infidelity, harassment, or other belief problems. One or both partners may feel alone in the relationship, rather than being supported and fulfilled. Identifying sources of distress and working with therapists to improve communication and rebuild trust can help couples rebuild their emotional bonds.

Effects on the mind

Cacioppo and his team have found that the brains of lonely people react differently compared to strong social networks. University of Chicago researchers show pictures of lonely and lonely people in photographs in both fun and unfavorable settings. When looking at a fun picture, a lonely subject shows more activity in the part of the brain known as ventral striatum than a lonely subject. The ventral striatum plays an important role in learning. It is also part of the brain's reward center, and can be stimulated by gifts like food and love. Lonely subjects showed much less activity in the region when viewing pleasant images, and they also had less brain activity when shown unpleasant images. When subjects who are not lonely view unpleasant images, they show activity at temporoparietal intersections, areas of the brain associated with empathy; lonely subjects had a lower response [source: University of Chicago].

Social withdrawal is to avoid people and activities that will normally be enjoyed. For some, this can continue to the point of social isolation, where people may even want to avoid contact with family and close friends most of the time. They may want to be alone because they feel tired or desperate with others. Sometimes cycles can develop where the more time they spend alone, the less they feel like people understand it, and the less they feel like people understand it, the more time they want to spend alone.
