Expeller pressing (also called oil pressing ) is a mechanical method for extracting oil from trademarked raw materials by Anderson International Corp. Valerius D. Anderson founded the VD Anderson Company in Cleveland, Ohio in 1888. In 1900, Mr. VD Anderson created the first expeller press operated successfully. Raw materials are squeezed under high pressure in one step. When used for the extraction of food oils, the typical ingredients are beans, seeds and algae, which are supplied to the press in a continuous feed. When raw materials are pressed, friction causes them to overheat; in the case of harder peanuts (which require higher pressure) the material may exceed 120 ° F (49 ° C).

Overview

An expeller press is a screw-type machine that primarily presses the oil seed through the cavity like a caged hole. Other materials used with press expeller include but not limited to meat by-products, synthetic rubber and animal feed. Raw materials incorporate one side of the press and waste products out from the other. The machine uses the friction and continuous pressure of the drive screws to move and compress the seed material. Oil seeps through small openings that do not allow solid grain fibers to be passed. After that, the pressed beads are formed into a hardened cake, which is ejected from the machine. The pressure involved in pressing the expeller creates heat in the range of 140-210 Â ° F (60-99 Â ° C). Some companies claim that they use refrigerators to reduce these temperatures to protect certain properties of the extracted oil.

Efficiency

The expeller's processing can not remove any last traces of liquid (usually oil) from raw materials. Large numbers remain trapped in the remaining cake after pressing. In most small-scale rural situations, this has little or no importance, since cakes left after oil is removed, found using local food, in the manufacture of secondary products, or for animal feed. Some raw materials, however, do not release oil with simple expulsion, the most prominent rice bran. To remove oil from commodities that do not respond to discharges or extract oil footprints after removal, it is necessary to use solvent extraction.

Design

Continuous screw

The earliest expeller engine uses a continuous screw design. The compression screw is very similar to the screw conveyor screw - that is, the helicoid breakout starts at one end and ends at the other end.

Breakup

Valerius Anderson invented the screw design cut off and patented it in 1900. Anderson observed that in the continuous arrangement of continuous screw connection compression, there is a tendency for slippery material to either rotate with screws or pass through with minimal drainage. He writes that "beer slops, slaughterhouses" and other "soft and soft" materials dry out poorly in continuous screw presses.

His invention consists of placing an interruption in the screw compression breakout. It was like having a cushioned hanger on a screw conveyor: there was no escape on the shaft at that point, so the material tended to stop moving and accumulate. Only after solids accumulate in the gap that the downstream escape captures the material. When this happens, material is forced along the way. The result is better drying and a more consistent cake press.

Gear resistors

After 1900 patents, major improvements were made with the addition of a resistor gear. Fitted into crevices where there is no escaping, these teeth increase agitation within the press, further reducing the co-rotation tendency.

Expanded apps

As time passes, the application of screw disconnected design is expanded beyond slippery and slimy material. This occurs because the continuous screw suppression works best only under constant feed conditions, at a constant consistency. If consistency or flow rate is reduced, the squeeze will be reduced to inadequate to remove the appropriate moisture. At the same time, if consistency increases, the press can get stuck. To overcome this trend it is necessary to build a very heavy press, often with an expensive variable speed drive.

Instead, it was found that the interruption in Anderson's screw break would provide cushioning in the press. If consistency falls, compression is still effective. The plug of a sufficiently dense material must be formed at each interruption before the solid can progress to the discharge. This self-correcting performance prevents the wet material from cleaning on cake droppings. This is achieved without varying the speed of the screw.

The economic advantage of this characteristic causes the suppression of disconnected screws used for non-slippery or slimy dewater fibers. Examples are alfalfa, corn husk, and, more recently, fiber paper mills.
