The characters, consisting of Forge in masks and prosthetic makeup can be described as 'anti-pope demons'. The character of Papa Emeritus has gone through four incarnations - I, II, III, and Nil. In 2018 the album Prequelle and the next world tour, Forge described the character known as "Cardinal Copia," which is described as unrelated to one of the characters of Papa Emeritus and whose costume consists of a Cardinal robes or a black tuxedo on the side a prosthetic mask with black eyemakeup and colorful eyes that have existed in every Papa character.

When the choir came to me, it haunted my dream.Every time I took the guitar, I finally played the development, and when I fit the words, said in, seems to cry for devil-oriented lyrics. "
After selecting the Ghost name, the band decided to use their love of horror movies and "Scandinavian music tradition" in the band's image. Four US CD producers turned down the job because the artwork for the deluxe edition of the album was described as "basically a 16th century illustration of the party." Instead of delaying further albums, the band decided to use artwork from the regular edition for a deluxe US press release and announce a new April 16 release date. All European copies and US vinyl versions include controversial artwork. Ghost embarked on their "Haze Over North America" ââtour on April 12th at the Coachella Festival, which consists of about twenty dates in the US and Canada, and continues until May 18th.

A Nameless Ghoul states that after the tour is over, they will write and record a new album that they claim will be much darker than Meliora , with Tobias confirming in a recent interview that the fourth album will be released in 2018.
In early 2017, Tobias Forge was sued by former Ghost member Simon S̮'̦derberg, Mauro Rubino, Martin Hjertstedt, and Henrik Palm as part of a royalty dispute. Four, who left Ghost in 2016, filed a lawsuit in Link̮'̦ping district court, Sweden and accused Forge, who was in charge of the band's business affairs, withholding financial information and payments to other members. The former members also claim that "our vocalist and former friend are now trying, cheating and unabashed, turning Ghost from the band into a solo project with paid musicians." Forge claims that "no legal partnership" ever existed between another member and himself; they paid a fixed salary to perform and execute the band's image as he was ordered as a "musician to hire." He also stated that he was referring to Ghost as a solo project, "Although I never wanted it that way, but in the end, that is what it is.I mean, I started it in 2006, and no one has ever been in the band in years 2016 even on the first recording. "Call it a solo, if you want, but I call it a project."
On August 24, 2017, the band released their last music video of Meliora for their song "He Is". It aired on Saint Vitus Bar in New York City the day before. The six Ghost members imitate the Roman Catholic Church but have turned the image to worship Satan instead of the Holy Trinity. Nameless Ghouls each represent one of five elements; fire, water, wind, earth, and ether, and use their respective alchemical symbols on their instruments. With the new Meliora costumes changing every Nameless Ghoul has all five emblazoned element symbols in the right chest of their costume, and the element symbol representing individual ghosts is highlighted to show the wearer's identity.
Papa Emeritus
The group's vocalist portrays the mascot character of the band, a Satanic priest known as Papa Emeritus. There are four different characters who take the name of Papa Emeritus. The first welcomes the second Papa Emeritus on December 12, 2012, at Link̮'̦ping. On June 3, 2015, the second Papa Emeritus welcomed his sister as the new Papa Emeritus in Link̮'̦ping after being "fired" for not doing his job in overthrowing the government and the church. Papa Emeritus II and Papa Emeritus III are stated to have only 3 months of age difference. On September 30, 2017 during a show in Gothenburg, Papa Emeritus III was dragged off the stage by two men, who then accompanied the new character, Papa Emeritus 0, onto the stage to introduce the band's next chapter. Papa Emeritus 0 is depicted significantly older than previous Papas, using a walker and an oxygen tank while walking on stage. On January 19, 2018, the band shared a video featuring characters, implicitly being Papa Emeritus IV, listening to Ceremonies and Dedication on an 8-track tape while criticizing Papa Emeritus III's vocal abilities. The character's face is hidden from the screen, but he is shown to be wearing a red robe similar to a cardinal priest. All versions of Papa Emeritus are actually the same vocalist.
Peter HÃÆ'ällje, former member of former member band Ghost Martin Persner, claimed he designed the character of Papa Emeritus in 2005, before the formation of Ghost. HÃÆ'ällje never appeared as Papa Emeritus and agreed with Persner to let him use the character for his new new band. His claim was later confirmed by Forge.
In April 2018, it was revealed that the "new leader" of Ghost was Cardinal Copia, who made his live debut with the group on a private acoustic show on April 6th. A video shows that Papa Emeritus one to three have been killed and their bodies embalmed. In an interview the following month, Forge stated that unlike previous Ghost frontmen, Cardinal Copia is planned to be around for about five years.
Identity
Anonymity is the main characteristic of Ghost; the members have not publicly disclosed their names, and the group's five instrumentalists are simply referred to as "Nameless Ghouls". During the signing, Nameless Ghouls signed the merchandise by attaching their individual alchemical symbol, while Papa Emeritus signed with his stage name or the letter "P.E." One Ghoul says the idea that band members remain anonymous to get attention is a misunderstanding, and that the idea is to erase their personalities to allow their audience to focus on the artwork itself. He also said, "If the music does not swing, I do not think that people will go away just about our looks". In 2011, a Nameless Ghoul said, "We are often misunderstood as roadies, which are very helpful, we are almost thrown out of the places we play, forgetting our backstage pass is a big deal." In early 2012, a member of the band said he enjoyed being an individual and that he could easily "step out of the bubble" when he wanted it. In May 2013, Ghoul revealed that they had begun to reveal their membership in the group to their friends and their local families "for the peace of the house."
In an August 2013 interview with Jack Osbourne for Fuse News, a member of the band said Dave Grohl had dressed up as Nameless Ghoul and secretly performed with Ghost. In April 2014, Nameless Ghoul revealed that the group has undergone several member changes over the years.
The Swedish Performing Rights Society is rumored to have Tobias Forge, vocalist of Swedish bands Subvision and Repugnant and former guitarist for CrashdÃÆ'ïet (using Mary Goore alias in the last two), credited with the song as "A Ghoul Writer". All band songs are credited to "A Ghoul Writer", causing people to suspect that Forge is Papa Emeritus. Ghost has stated that they will not comment on rumors about their identity. After the lawsuit in 2017, Forge's identity as Papa Emeritus is revealed.
In March 2017, Swedish musician Martin Persner from the band Magna Carta Cartel claimed in a short video clip that he is a rhythm guitarist, also known as Omega, from 2009 to July 2016. This marks the first time anyone has publicly identified himself as a Ghost member. A few months before Persner's announcement, the band recruited a new female bass player suspected of being Lez Zeppelin bassist Megan Thomas, who was later confirmed by Forge. A lawsuit against Forge in April 2017 on behalf of four former members revealed their names, as well as the names of some previous members. When asked about the complete lineup changes at the end of 2016, Forge stated that Ghost "is always sort of... I guess some sort of Bathory band, where there are people playing directly, and those who play directly are not always the same thing played on the recording. "
Music
Ghost music has been categorized in many genres, although critics typically classify them as heavy metal, doom metal, hard rock, and at lower levels of progressive rock and psychedelic rock. Adrien Begrand of PopMatters states that Ghost recalled the early sounds of Black Sabbath, Pentagram, and Judas Priest, as well as progressive and psychedelic rocks in the late 60s. Speaking to Noisey.com Nameless Ghoul describes Ghost as a black metal band in the traditional sense, but says that they may not be in accordance with the norms of the current black metal scene. Nameless Ghoul describes Ghost music as a mix between pop and death metal.
In an interview, Nameless Ghoul said that they were influenced by "everything from classic rock to extreme underground metal bands from the 80s to film scores to the greatness of emotional harmonic music." A member of the band said the black Swedish and Scandinavian black movements in the early 90s played a major role in their actions, and said that each member came from a metal background. However, the band has stated several times that they did not aim to become a metal band. For their second album, Ghost chose a more diverse songwriting style; a member said, "we try to deliberately have each song have its own signature." Only a few members actually wrote songs. The authors compiled an acoustic line of songs before other instrumentation was added so it sounded like a group, rather than dominated by guitar. By 2017, Forge claims that he is the lead author of every song except "Year Zero" and "Zenith", which is Persner's idea. Asked how he made the Ghost sound intact despite major lineup changes, Forge said he had to teach them to play as he did; explains that while he is a good guitar player, he's just a drummer, bassist and keyboardist that's "okay". So it is a matter of making them "underperform [laugh] together."
Their lyrics are explicitly Satan; One Ghoul said, "The first album is about the coming of the coming Devil, which is widely spoken in biblical terms, as the church will say that the end of the world is near. [1] Infestissumam is about the presence of Satan and the presence of the Antichrist. "However, the band has said several times their pictures are all tongue-in-cheek, quoting that" We have no militant agenda. "We are an entertainment group." Infestissumam also deals with "how people relate to gods or gods, themes such as submission and superstition, the horror of being religious." In addition, Nameless Ghoul says the second album is about "how mankind - especially men - what they perceive as the presence of Satan, throughout history and even today, and that is why the record is so sparked by the sexual and female theme... is basically a man who accuses women as Devils simply because they have difficulties for them. "The group theater is influenced by Kiss, David Bowie and Alice Cooper, but a member says they are more influenced by Pink Floyd. A Ghoul then quotes the Death SS as an influence on their "gimmick" but not their music.
Controversy
The Ghost Devil's theme has proven problematic for the group, especially in the United States. While recording Infestissumam in Nashville, Tennessee, they could not find a choir singer who would sing their lyrics, forcing them to record parts in Hollywood. The group could not find a record maker in the US to hit the album because it featured artwork that showed nudity, resulting in a delay for the album release. When an interviewer suggested that the band's music become more "radio-friendly" and that they were accepted into the mainstream of the US, a Nameless Ghoul replied that in the US their music was banned from major networking stores, mostly late-night television shows, great commercial radio station. He said, "So, yes, mainstream America really welcomes us with open legs." During an interview with Loudwire in October 2015, a member of the band stated that by 2015, the US has become more accepting of their music and image, further evidenced by their performances as the main musical guest at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. i> on October 30, 2015, during the Halloween themed episode. This is the first live television appearance Ghost in the United States.
Chicago's heavy metal themed restaurant, Kuma's Corner, adds a hamburger called "The Ghost" to the menu in honor of Ghost. The recipes include goat shoulder, red wine reduction, and wafer communion. Local Catholic institutions have called the "tasteless" burger and asked Kuma's Corner to remove it from the menu. Restaurant owners acknowledge the controversy and declare they respect religion while refusing to remove burgers, citing the First Amendment. To show his respect for conflicting views, he also donated $ 1,500 to the Catholic charity of the Chicago Archdiocese.
