Mark S. George, MD (born March 17, 1958) is a professor of psychiatry, radiology and neuroscience and is director of the University of South Carolina Medical Center (MUSC) for Advanced Imaging Research and Brain Stimulation Laboratory.

George's major research interests include severe depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder (especially obsessive-compulsive disorder), Tourette's syndrome, and chronic pain. The main techniques include neuroimaging (functional magnetic resonance imaging and Positron emission tomography), brain stimulation, vagal nerve stimulation (VNS), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), deep brain stimulation (DBS), and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

After earning a B.A. in philosophy (cum laude) at Davidson College in 1980, George went on to earn a M.D. from the University of Medicine of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina in 1985, where he is still working today. George received the Falcone Prize for Extraordinary Achievement in Affective Disorder Research in 2008 (renamed Colvin Prize in 2012) from Brain & amp; The Behavior Research Foundation and currently a member of the Foundation's Scientific Board.

As a pioneer using TMS to treat depression, George has recently received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration to use the technique. It is thought to be very effective for treating depressed people who do not respond to antidepressant drugs.

Dr. George is also an integral part of research on the use of fMRI as a method of lie detection. This study shows that certain areas of the brain are activated when a subject is misleading, and has shown a high success rate in clinical trials. It remains to be seen whether this method will ultimately replace traditional polygraphs in the rule of law.
