In American English, the term pantyhose generally refers to socks traditionally worn by women since its introduction in 1959, but some manufacturers also produce pantyhose for men , or, colloquially, mantyhose , brosiery , or guylons .

History

In 1996 L'eggs, a US pantyhose company, opened a storefront along with a product related bulletin board on the web. They soon discover that most of the visitors talking about their products are male. After conducting a survey in 1998, the company came to the conclusion that, in fact, many men wore pantyhose as plain clothes, and would buy leggings in a well-targeted series of men's products, if any.

Based on this survey and other market research, G. Lieberman & Sons (GLS Hosiery) began producing and marketing ComfiLon in 1999, which became Activskin in 2002. Comfilon/ActivSkin was so successful that it inspired Levee, the German pantyhose producer, to create a unisex product line called WoMan in 2002. Wolford, an Austrian socks luxury, manufacturers also introduced 'Waistsocks' for men. Almost every year since then at least one manufacturer has entered the market with a male product line, such as Collanto in Germany and Gerbe in France.

To manage public relations and serve as a spokesperson for issues related to male pantyhose in the US media, GLS hired Steve Newman in 2009. The company expects to reach a tipping point in the near future in connection with public perceptions and growth of male stockings and trend pants. In addition to the family of men's clothing manufacturers, there are other manufacturers in Eastern Europe called Legwear Team that test the local market with men's tights and leggings. Men's tights also cover 2-3% of the Italian lego clothing designer Emilio Cavallini's business.

Market size

The market for male pantyhose has continued to grow steadily since 1999. While ActivSkin, a men's stockings and menswear seller, did not release any special sales data, they now sell to customers worldwide in 76 countries and have reported growth every year since their inception. An important component of that growth is the continued expansion of public awareness of this phenomenon. On March 14, 2012, Forbes magazine indicated that mantyhose could be the next billion dollar dollar denominated clothing idea.

Usage

As an everyday dress

Men who wear pantyhose as ordinary clothes have been the media's attention with increasing frequency since 2002, beginning with a front page of the Wall Street Journal article on the subject, titled "Kingsize, Not Queen: Some Men Taking to Wear Pantyhose". Some reasons to use it include:

  • To stimulate circulation if working in a profession that requires them to sit all day, or vice versa, if they stand for a long time. In addition, compression can help reduce swelling and reduce the danger of circulatory problems.
  • To improve athletic performance, energize and revitalize tired and sore leg muscles

One can find mere pantyhose and opaque for men, denier ranging from 8 den (very thin) to over 100 den (opaque). They usually come in black, brown, brown, and navy blue. In the US, socks over 70 hives are usually referred to as 'tights'. This threshold is subjective, and lower denier socks can be considered strict in U.S. vocabulary.

Some men wear pantyhoses under trousers, with or without socks, while more and more are wearing them with shorts. They have found that it is very difficult to notice the pantyhose that fits perfectly with the skin tone, as long as the leg hair is removed or kept tightly. Because the male pantyhose continues to move from the periphery to the mainstream reception, more men also wear colored legwear (black, blue, dark brown) with shorts.

Medical reason

Pantyhose and other "compression stockings" can be used to provide relief from leg or ankle swelling and varicose veins. They provide warmth and support for men who have Raynaud's phenomenon. They can also be used as supportive therapy for vascular disorders such as lymphedema and deep venous thrombosis.

The effects of non-medical sock support are provided only through notices in many medical literature. This is mainly due to the lack of experimentally measurable information available on the contribution of non-medical grade support socks on foot circulation. That does not mean nothing is available.

According to the United States Department of Health & amp; Human Services, "One of the most important things a person can do to slow the development of new varicose veins is to use the incremental compression support stockings as much as possible during the day." It also lists "wear elastic support stockings" as a means of reducing the possibility of acquiring new varicose veins and spider veins. In addition, a 2001 study cited by the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery concluded that, "The use of mild compression (low compression), ready-to-wear gradient compression is very effective in improving symptoms of discomfort, swelling, fatigue, pain, which is fast. "

Most populations - men and women - will eventually suffer some sort of foot circulation problem, including venous insufficiency and related problems. There is no physiological difference between males and females that prevent it from developing in men in almost the same frequency as females, therefore men can benefit from the prevention aspect of the full length of support of every bit sock as much as female counterparts they. It is important to consult a doctor when the problem is worsening and varicose veins begin to appear, to ensure medical intervention is not necessary. Regular use of stockings or full support stockings may be all that is needed to prevent these symptoms from occurring.

In scuba diving

Some scuba-diving men have been known to wear pantyhose or similar clothes under their wetsuits to get a little extra insulation against cold water. It also helps in wearing and removing wetsuit. Pantyhose is also an effective protection against box jellyfish sting. Pantyhose was previously thought to work due to the long box jellyfish (nematocysts), but is now known to be related to the way stinger cells work. The stinging cells in box jellyfish tentacles are not triggered by touch, but instead are triggered by chemicals found on the skin.

Rationale

There are a number of male anecdotes that wear pantyhoses for practical purposes almost since their original introductions in the women's market, but these stories are usually difficult to verify because the men tend to refrain from discussing the issue. Such anecdotes include:

  • NFL football players wear them in uniforms in cold weather.
  • Hunters and campers wear it as a base layer under other cold weather clothing.
  • Men with varicose veins or other circulatory problems that may or may not require surgical socks.
  • The horseman wore it to prevent blisters and saddles.
  • Soldiers who have to cross the deep water and want protection from leeches.
  • Motorcyclists wear them under the riding teeth to aid movement and prevent friction.
  • As a possible measure of ticks and chiggers; also blister.

The reason why manufacturers now produce pantyhose for men:

  • The women's market has declined since the late 1990s, while the men's market is growing.
  • Online socks retailers have reported that most of their sales are for male customers.
  • Men tend to need a longer period of their purchase and therefore will pay more per item for better quality.
