History
Topshop started as a brand extension from department store Peter Robinson in 1960 and originally sold fashion by young British designers, such as Mary Quant and Stirling Cooper. Peter Robinson is a women's fashion chain that Burton had bought in 1946. Topshop was founded in 1964 as the Top Store of Peter Robinson, a youth brand in the Sheffield branch and also has a large department at Oxford Street Stores. This is a high fashion for "young and different" as The Times put it in 1965, and the department is spreading out clothes with names like Mary Quant and Gerald McCann. In 1966, he had a branch in Peter Robinson's shop in Norwich.
Top Shopper Peter Robinson's Diane Wadey has an eye for young talent and introduced graduates of the Royal College of Art Jane Whiteside to Jeff Cooper and Ronnie Stirling - the Stirling Cooper brand they created soon had their own parts at the Top Shop shop in London and Sheffield, as well as stocked at Peter Robinson's stores in Norwich and Bristol. Other brands that are stocked in the Top Shop include Jeff Banks, French Connection, and Radley Cooper.
Separate retail chain launch
In 1973, the parent company Burton Group launched a major expansion of women's clothing division, splitting Top Shop by Peter Robinson into two chains known as Peter Robinson and Top Shop. It was announced that while Peter Robinson will target the market for over 25, the Top Shop will focus on the age range from 13 to 24, with Ralph Halpern directing the new venture. In 1974, Peter Robinson had been reduced from 22 stores to six, while Top Shop developed independently (still maintaining a co-branded shop on Oxford Street) and described it as "very profitable". Its main retail competitors include Miss Selfridge and Way In Harrods boutique arm. Within two years, Top Shop has 55 independent branches, with more coming in line with the article in The Times. Prudence Glynn fashion editor describes it as having: "the definition of a sharp goal". It made a profit of £ 1 million that year. In 1978, the Top Shop accounted for a third of Burton's operating profit.
Also in 1978, Burton embarked on a venture to win a larger male fashion market share amid a decline in men's clothing sales, launching the Topman brand along the same lines as the women's retail arm. It was described by an executive as: "more than 'brother to the Top Shop rather than Burton's son'." The following year, Burton announced sales and profits of up to 30 percent in women's clothing, with Topman also cited as being very profitable. In the early 1980s, the brand was called Topshop.
1980s and so on
In the 1980s, Topshop struggled to maintain his profile as a fashion brand, but in the late 1990s he began to undergo a revival. This turnaround is often credited to Jane Shepherdson's promotion as a brand director. After starting his career as a buyer, he was promoted to the company. When he took the brand direction, Topshop has an annual profit of Ã, à £ 9 million; in 2005 it earned more than à £ 100 million per year.
Under his tenure, Topshop became the main sponsor of London Fashion Week, sponsoring his Newgen branch supporting the British designers emerging from 2002 and the Fashion East initiative - acting as a bridge between London fashion colleges and the Newgen scheme - a year later. This sponsorship continues and since 2005 has become part of the London Fashion Week catwalk schedule.
In 2012, it's partly owned by a US-based private equity group.
In 2015, Topshop began collaborating with online retailer Zalando and began selling their merchandise in their stores. Ads featuring Delevingne How to model are broadcast in Germany, Switzerland, and France.
Designer collections
Topshop has become one of the chain stores in the UK to work with high fashion brands in capsule collections. In 1994, he launched a collection with Red or Dead. It continues to work with designer talents, such as former Clements assistant Ribeiro Markus Lupfer - described in 1999 as "so hot he is practically steaming" - also works with, among others, Hussein Chalayan, Tristan Webber and Tracey Boyd. Typically, the range is sold out quickly, and draws an inch column in the press mode.
In May 2007, British supermodel Kate Moss designed her first collection for the brand. Moss's appointment was announced just before Shepherdson's departure for Whistles. That same year, artist Stella Vine designed a limited edition edition inspired by her artwork. These include T-shirts, vest tops, and T-shirt dresses, with labels designed in pink glitter. The Guardian commented that "the fact that the T-shirts he recently designed for TopShop - emblazoned with slogans like Breaking Up With Her Boyfriend - flew out, talked a lot for his public support."
In 2014, Beyonce signed an agreement to launch a sports brand with Topshop. The 50-50 business was originally called Parkwood Topshop Athletic Ltd and is scheduled to launch its first dance, fitness and sporting range in fall 2015. In November 2015, it was revealed that the brand will be launched in April 2016. The brand was later revealed. called Ivy Park.

In December 2010, some 200 campaigners staged a sit-in that closed the Oxford Circus store in Topshop, and in Brighton a number of protesters glued themselves to the window of the branch office. Other high streets in towns and cities across the UK see similar protests within a day of action by the UK Cut out of corporate tax arrangements. Two months later, the police arrested a man for writing "pay your taxes" with a washable ink on the wall of the Topshop branch in Colchester.
In July 2013, singer and pop star Rihanna won a lawsuit against Topshop to prevent her unofficial use of her image on a T-shirt. The lawsuit was launched on the premise that Topshop customers would consider Rihanna to support the company, which would lead to a false representation of her celebrity image and heighten tensions with her support agreement with River Island, a street rival. Justice Judge Birss agrees that customers will likely be tricked into believing that it gets the singer's approval. Topshop launched an appeal to the High Court, accusing Rihanna of mistakenly suggesting that "only celebrities can market their own character" and Justice Briss for misreading the law on "celebrity merchandising." The appeal was rejected unanimously at the Court of Appeals in London on January 22, 2015
In July 2015, Topshop was criticized for his mannequins considered too thin. After customers complained on Facebook, the fashion chain stopped using a tall and thin women's shop mannequin.
