Super Bowl XXXIV Recap: Rams vs. Titans | NFL - YouTube
src: i.ytimg.com

Super Bowl XXXIV is an American football game between the champions of National Football Conference (NFC) St. Louis Rams and the Tennessee Football Conference (AFC) Tennessee Titans champion for the National Football League (NFL) championship for the 1999 season. The Rams defeated the Titans 23-16, capturing their first win at the Super Bowl and the first NFL championship since 1951 The game, played on Sunday, January 30, 2000 at Georgia Dome in Atlanta, is the fourth Super Bowl to be held a week after the conference championship game (the previous time this happened was Super Bowl XXVIII, and by chance the game was also played on January 30th in Georgia Dome in Atlanta).

The Rams entered their second Super Bowl in team history with the NFC's best regular 13-3 season record. This is the first playoff performance of the franchise since 1989, when they were still in Los Angeles. The Titans, originally Houston Oilers, also finished the regular season with a 13-3 record, but advanced to their first Super Bowl in team history after entering the playoffs as a wild-card team. Tennessee finished second in the AFC Central division behind 14-2 Jacksonville Jaguars.

The first two quarters of the Super Bowl XXXIV are mostly a defensive battle. Despite defeating the Titans in total offensive yard in the first half, 294-89, the Rams only led 9-0 in the first half with three goals on the pitch. Louis then scored their first goal in the mid third quarter to go up 16-0. Tennessee then responded by scoring 16 points in a row to tie the match with 2:12 remaining time remaining. This is the biggest deficit to be removed in the Super Bowl and the first deficit is greater than 10 points. On the next drive of the Rams, quarterback Kurt Warner completed a 73-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Isaac Bruce to regain his lead. The Titans then drove into the St. Louis 10-yard line with six seconds remaining but in the final game of the game, linebacker Rams Mike Jones handled Tennessee wide-receiver Kevin Dyson a short yard from the goal line to prevent a potentially touchdown-binding game. This game goes to NFL lore as One Yard Short , or just The Tackle . Warner was later named Super Bowl MVP, becoming the sixth player to win the award and the NFL MVP during the same season. At that time, 414 passes through the yard and 45 attempts to pass without an interception broke the Super Bowl record.

This game is often referred to as "Dot-com Super Bowl" because of the large number of ads purchased by dot-com companies. This game is then displayed as one of the Best NFL Games as The Longest Yard .

The NFL owners handed Super Bowl XXXIV to Atlanta during their October 31, 1996 meeting held in New Orleans. Other cities to consider are Miami, Tampa, and Los Angeles. The owner initially planned to select only two hosts (XXXIII and XXXIV), but decided to name three after a strong show by each delegate. Miami, Atlanta and Tampa were selected to host each of XXXIII, XXXIV, and XXXV.

St. Louis Rams

The Rams entering 1999 have been among the league fighters for a decade. The reasons are many, including, some suggest, mismanaged by executives John Shaw. Franchise moved to stadium-funded taxpayer in St. Louis. Louis, Missouri for the 1995 season, but kept fighting. In 1997, the team hired Dick Vermeil as their head coach, taking him back to the NFL after 15 years of retirement. Vermeil had previously transformed the Philadelphia Eagles from one of the worst teams in the league to the Super Bowl team in 1980, but his first two seasons at St. Louis barely became a star, winning only 5 games in 1997 and 4 in 1998.

Little is expected of the Rams for 1999. Indeed, NSP Preview NPM from ESPN The Magazine in 1999 predicted that Rams would be the worst team in the NFL; even worse than the Cleveland Browns, who had returned as an expansion team that year.

The Rams went on to surprise the NFL with a regular 13-3 NFC best-season record and beat their opponents 526-242, the highest scoring margin (284) of any Super Bowl champion. This is Rams' first playoff performance since 1989 and only the second Super Bowl appearance in team history. St. Louis is led by quarterback midfielder Kurt Warner, who started the season as a reserve for Trent Green. Green suffered a season-ending knee injury in preseason, making Warner as the team's new starter. Warner previously played for Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League and the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe.

In his first NFL season in 1998, Warner only played one game and only threw 11 bait. But in 1999, he experienced one of the most spectacular seasons ever by the quarterback, passing a passer rating of 109.2, completing 65.1 percent of operands to 4,353 yards, 41 goals, and just 13 interception, and earning the NFL Most Valuable Player Award. Warner is not the only Rams player to make statistically significant. Running back Marshall Faulk, in his first year at St. Louis after spending five seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, winning the NFL Offensive Player of the Year Player. He scored 12 goals, rushed for 1,381 yards, and recorded 87 team receptions for 1,048 yards. Overall, Faulk earned a record 2,429 yard total and became the second run back in NFL history to get over 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in the same season (Roger Craig was the first to do so, in 1985). Faulk holds the NFL record for yards of soccer practice in a season until Tennessee's Chris Johnson broke it in 2009.

Faulk was not the only weapon that Warner fought in 1999. Veteran recipient Isaac Bruce was the top Rams recipient with 77 receptions for 1,165 yards and 12 touchdowns. while wide-reaching runaway recruits newcomer Torry Holt recorded 52 receptions, 788 yards, and 6 touchdowns. Even the third wide receiver of the team, Az-Zahir Hakim, is a big contributor by capturing 36 passes for 677 yards and 8 goals, while also returning punts to 461 yards and other touchdowns. The offensive Rams line is led by Pro Bowlers Orlando Pace and Adam Timmerman. Timmerman, acquired by Rams in 1999, has previously won the Super Bowl XXXI with the Green Bay Packers. On a special team, recipient Tony Horne returned 30 kicks for 892 yards and 2 touchdowns, giving him a 29.7 meter NFL per average return.

Overall, the violation of St. Louis led the league in total yard earned (6,639), scored (526 points), and passed touchdown (42).

Rams' defense leads the league in the fewest rushing yards allowed (1,189) and the least hurried touchdown (4), while giving up only 242 points. Overall, the 4th ranked defense in the league in the least total amount allowed (5,056). The line was moored by the Pro Bowl defensive, Kevin Carter, and the defense end of Grant Wistrom. Carter led the league with 17 sacks, while Wistrom recorded 8.5 sacks and 2 intercepts, returning both for touchdown and a combined total of 131 yards. Behind them, Rams has three linebackers: London Fletcher (66 tackles and 3 sacks), Mike Jones (4 interceptions for 96 yards back and 2 goals, and 2 fumble recovery for 51 yards back and 1 goal), and Todd Collins (72 handle, 1 sack, and 2 interceptions for 16 yards). The secondary is led by Pro Bowler Todd Lyght (6 interceptions), Dexter McCleon (4 interceptions), and rookie DrÃÆ' Â © Bly (3 interceptions).

Tennessee Titans

The Titans advanced to their first Super Bowl in team history, having originated as a charter member of the American Football League. From 1960 to 1996, the team was owned by Houston, Texas businessman Bud Adams and was known as Houston Oilers . In 1995, however, Adams, like Frontiere, was lured to move his team from Houston, in this case to a new stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. As the new stadium was not ready until 1999, Adams decided to move his team to the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee in 1997 after playing before a small crowd of Houston in 1996.

The name named Tennessee Oilers was also played before a rare Memphis crowd, and thus spent the 1998 season playing at Vanderbilt Nashville Stadium. After the new Adelphia Coliseum (now known as the Nissan Stadium) was completed in 1999, the team name was changed to Tennessee Titans . With the appearance of Tennessee Super Bowl, every former AFL team has now played in the Super Bowl, including eight original AFL teams and two AFL expansion teams: Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals.

The 1999 Titans were led by quarterback Steve McNair and ran back Eddie George. McNair has missed five games due to injuries during the season, but he is still capable of putting up solid figures, throwing for 2,179 yards and 12 goals with only 8 interceptions. Despite injury problems, McNair finished the season as the second leading rusher on the team with 337 yards and scored 8 goals. George also has an incredible season, rushing for 1,304 yards, and catching 47 tickets for 458 yards (reception, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns are all career highs). Overall, George scored a grand total of 13 rushing and receiving a touchdown, and was selected to play in the Pro Bowl for the third year in a row.

Another contributor to the Titans offense is fullback Lorenzo Neal, who often serves as George's main blocker and is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the league. The team had no great inside threat, but wide receiver Yancey Thigpen recorded 38 receptions for 648 yards, wide receiver Kevin Dyson had 54 receptions for 658 yards, and tight end Frank Wycheck caught 69 passes for 641 yards. Up front, their line is moored by the Pro Bowl handling Bruce Matthews.

The Tennessee defense is also very effective. Pro Bowl final defensive Jevon Kearse anchor line, recording 14.5 sacks to go along with 8 forcible groping and named Rookie Defensive of the Year from the NFL. The linebacking corps was led by Eddie Robinson, who recorded 64 tackles and 6 sacks. Their middle school is led by cornerback Samari Rolle, who leads the team with 4 interceptions.

The Titans finished the regular season with a 13-3 record (including a home win over the Rams), but came second behind 14-2 Jacksonville Jaguars at AFC Central. The Jaguars' only two losses were for the Titans, but three Tennessee losses forced them to enter the playoffs as a wild-card team.

Playoffs

Playing in his first NFL playoff game, Warner threw 395 yards and 5 goals, with 1 interception, as the Rams defeated Minnesota Vikings, 49-37 at St. Louis, scoring 35 unanswered points in the second half. Bruce caught 4 passes for 133 yards and one goal. Faulk earned 101 combined rushing/receiving yards and scoring 2 goals. Although Viking quarterback Jeff George threw 423 yards and 4 goals, three of his scores came at the end of the 4th quarter, after the Rams had ruled out the game.

The Rams then narrowly defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 11-6 at home, in a hard-fought defensive struggle at the NFC Championship. The first half ended with the Rams leading 5-3 on Jeff Wilkins field and after a hard kick by the Buccaneers through their own end zone for safety. Tampa Bay then scored a field goal in the 3rd quarter to take the lead. But Warner threw a 30-yard touchdown pass forward to the recipient Ricky Proehl with 4:44 remaining in the game.

Meanwhile, The Titans started their postseason by defeating Buffalo Bills, 22-16 in Nashville, on a famous and famous kickoff return game known in NFL lore as Music City Miracle. Tennessee jumped to a 12-0 lead in the first half with Al Del Greco field goals, safety by Kearse, and McNair touchdown goal. However, Buffalo regained the lead, 13-12 with two goals from Antowain Smith running in the second half (a two-pointer conversion after Smith's second goal failed). In the 4th quarter, Titans returned to the lead after Del Greco kicked his second field goal. With 16 seconds remaining in the game, Bicker Steve Christie's kicker made what appeared to be a 41-yard field goal that won the match to give his side an advantage, 16-15. However, Neal received the next kickoff and handed the ball to Wycheck, who then ball into Dyson on the other side of the field, who eventually ran 75 yards into the final zone for a winning game touchdown. The drama is reviewed to determine whether Wycheck has fed the ball to Dyson or made an illegal pass forward. Referee Phil Luckett upheld the original call in the touchdown field, giving Tennessee a victory.

The Titans then defeated the Indianapolis Colts, 19-16 in Indianapolis. After both teams exchanged goals in the first half, George scored in a 68-yard touchdown to give his side a 13-9 lead. Del Greco then kicked two more field goals in the fourth quarter to get rid of the game. George finished the game with a record of 162 franchise playoffs rushing yards and touchdowns, while Del Greco made four field goals.

The Titans then eliminated Jacksonville Jaguars, 33-14, at the AFC Championship Game in Jacksonville. The Jaguars completed the 1999 regular season with a best 14-2 league record, and advanced to the AFC title game after destroying Miami Dolphins 62-7 and limiting the future of the Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino was only 11 of 25 settlements for 95 yards and 1 touchdown, with 2 interceptions. However, the Tennessee defense dominated the Jaguars in the AFC Championship Game, forcing 6 turnovers. Jacksonville led 14-10 at half-time, but the Titans then scored 23 unanswered points on two touchdowns by McNair, a safety, and a 80-yard back-kick from Derrick Mason for a touchdown. Although McNair passed just 112 yards and one touchdown with one interception, he rushed for 91 yards and 2 goals on 9 brought. George rushed for 86 yards and caught 3 bait for 19 yards.

Maps Super Bowl XXXIV

Pre-match note

In January 2000, two ice storms hit the Atlanta area within a week of each other. A second storm occurred during the week where the Super Bowl was entertained. Despite the rare rare weather conditions, cities and states keep ice-free roads and sidewalks, and Marta's public transport continues. The Atlanta area does not receive more ice storms than most other parts of the country, and the Super Bowl XXXIV is played indoors and is unaffected by the elements. But some residents believe that bad weather during the Super Bowl week had a negative impact on the city's chances of hosting other Super Bowls, including the missing bid for the Super Bowl XLIII. The offer includes meteorological data showing the scarcity of such storms in the area. They finally got an offer to host the Super Bowl LIII.

Nashville, the home of the Titan, is also the Atlanta-St. Louis's highway corridor, which covers the entire Interstate 24, and uses other highways to complete the route.

This is, to date, the latest Super Bowl in which both teams have never won the Super Bowl before.

Television

ABC broadcast matches in the United States, with Al-Mala play-by-play broadcaster and color commentator Boomer Esiason. Chris Berman from brother company owned by Disney ESPN organizes all events. Berman joins fellow ESPN analyst Steve Young while ESPN Mike Tirico is on hand for a post-match presentation of Vince Lombardi Trophy. Lesley Visser and Lynn Swann serve as side reporters.

It was also the first Super Bowl to be aired in high definition and 5.1 Dolby Digital. ABC Sports chose to use 720p format.

Ironically, the ABC affiliate in St Louis, KDNL-TV, has been considered one of the weakest affiliates of the network since joining the network in 1995. The previous ABC affiliate, KTVI, on the contrary, was one of the strongest affiliates - being Fox station in 1995, and thus, has broadcasted most of the Rams games in this period.

The game is then displayed as one of the Best NFL Games as The Longest Yard .

Ads

The game is often referred to as the Super Bowl "dot-com" since it was held during the top of the dot-com bubble, and some Internet companies bought television commercials. E-Trade runs ads featuring chimp dances with E-Trade t-shirts and the text "Well, we only spend 2 million dollars." Lifeminders.com runs plain text ads beginning with the line "This is the worst ad in the Super Bowl, but maybe that's the best thing you saw tonight." Pets.com is famous for paying millions for ads featuring sock puppets, even though the company will collapse before the end of the year.

Ringkasan permainan

Paruh Pertama

The defense of both teams seemed to dominate most of the first half. The Rams started the game strong by taking the opening kickoff and marching to the 17-yard Tennessee line. But on the third down, Blaine Bishop's safety pressed Kurt Warner's quarterback to provide an incomplete feed. Then the next field goal effort failed when the player/holder Mike Horan fumbled the buzz. The Titans responded by moving the ball into the 29-yard St. Louis line, assisted by running back 32-yard reception Eddie George. However, they also came up empty after Al Del Greco's kicker missed a 47-yard field goal effort.

For the remaining half, the Titans were forced to punt at all their possessions. Instead, the Rams were able to reach inside the Tennessee 20-yard line on all four drives remaining before halftime, but on each, the Titans defense forced St. Louis to complete field-goal efforts from kicker Jeff Wilkins, who managed to make three of them, but missed an effort from 34 yards. The Rams eventually led on a part-time, 9-0, but their goal-scoring margins on the Titans looked a bit small, considering they drove into various scorers on every one of their first-half possession and beating Tennessee in total yards, 294-89.

Third Quarter

The crime of both teams began to happen in the second half. The Titans took the opening kickoff of the 3rd quarter and drove 43 yards to the St. Louis 29-yard line. But Tennessee remained goalless after defensive back Todd Lyght blocked Del Greco's 47-yard field attempt. After that, Warner turned the third situation down with a settlement to Marshall Faulk, then on the next two dramas threw a 31-yard strike into wide receiver Isaac Bruce and a 16-yard finish to end Ernie Conwell tightly before completing a 68-yard drive with a touchdown pass 9 -yard to Torry Holt, giving St. Louis led 16-0. Completed at Conwell, Bishop joins to do tackle, but suffers from a spinal cord injury and has to leave the game. The game was delayed for several minutes while Bishop was being treated.

Tennessee wide receiver Derrick Mason returns the next 35 yards to the 34-yard line. From there, five runs with George both for 24 yards, three settlements from quarterback Steve McNair to end tight Frank Wycheck to 15 yards and run by McNair to two forward the ball into the St. Louis 25-yard line. Then McNair rushed as far as 23 yards to the 2-yard line, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by George two dramas later. The touchdown cut the Titans' deficit to 16-6 after McNair's pass to Wycheck on an incomplete two-point fall attempt.

Fourth Quarter

Titans' first score triggered them to rally. After forcing Rams to kick the ball on the next possession, a pair of 21-yards finished from McNair to end Jackie Harris and wide receiver Isaac Byrd helped a 13-play, 79-yard drive bordered by 2-yard touchdown run George to make the score 16-13. The Tennessee defense then forced the Rams into a three-and-out, and 30-yard Horan's ball gave the Titans a ball back on their 47-yard line. Titans' crime then drove only 28 yards on their next possession, but it was close enough for Del Greco to try a 43-yard field goal. This time, Del Grec's kick was good, tying the score at 16-16 with 2:12 remaining time in the game. The 16-point deficit is the biggest deficit to be eliminated in the Super Bowl and the first larger than 10 points. It was also the first time in the Super Bowl, a team that fell two digits in the fourth quarter has tied the game. Also, however, the Titans are just tying the game and have not gained an edge.

Then in the first Rams game of the next trip, Warner threw a long pass that was caught in a 38-yard line of Titans by Bruce, who then ran to the far end of the zone for a 73-yard touchdown to give St. Louis leads 23-16. Similarly, in the 1951 NFL Championship, the victory quarter-winning Norma Arena 37-yard win from Lan van Linck to wide receiver Tom Fears broke the 17-17 tie in the fourth quarter and gave the Rams a seven-point win to win the NFL title. A copy of Warner's copy to Bruce was the only settlement in the 4th quarter.

The Titans took over the ball in their own 12-yard line with 1:48 remaining in the game after making a penalty in the next game. McNair started the drive with a pair of settlements to Mason and Wycheck to earn 9 and 7 yards to reach the 28-yard line. After an incomplete pass, the defensive returns a 15-yard prison sentence DrÃÆ'Â © Bly while tackling McNair on a 12-yard scramble giving Titans 1 down on the St. Louis 45-yard line. In the next game, St. Louis was sentenced to 5 yards for offsides, moving the ball to the 40-yard line with 59 seconds left. McNair then ran as far as 2 yards, then threw a 7-page insert into wide receiver Kevin Dyson. In the next game, Tennessee almost lost the ball when Bly stepped in front of a gully aimed at Mason, only to get through it. Two plays later, with Titans facing 3rd down and 5 to go, McNair was hit by two Rams defenders, but he escaped and completed a 16-yard bait to the Dyson to get 1 down on the Rams' 10 yard line. Tennessee then used their last timeout with just six seconds remaining, giving them a chance for the last one game to tie the match.

Last play

The game's final game of the Rams' 10-yard line has dropped in NFL history as just "The Tackle". Tennessee plans to use Frank Wycheck's tight end as a decoy. Wycheck will run straight up the field on the right side, to lure midfielder Mike Jones away from recipient Kevin Dyson. Dyson will then tilt to the left past the center of the field. With Jones occupying Wycheck, quarterback Steve McNair will pass the ball to the Dyson, who will be open from a distance of about five yards to score.

As the drama begins, everything seems to go as planned. Jones ran with Wycheck on the pitch at the start of the game. However, when the bait was sent to Dyson, Jones, who was on the goal line, glanced at his left shoulder and saw Dyson open the ball catch. Jones shifted his way and ran toward the Titans. Dyson raced straight into the final zone, but his legs were wrapped by Jones by about two and a half yards into the goal line.

Since Dyson is being handled by the foot, there is still the possibility he can reach towards the end zone and get the ball over the goal line. The two players made a rolling motion as Dyson reached out with the ball to the goal line in hopes of scoring. Despite its close range, and the ball just inches from the end zone, it is still not enough to score. When the rolling motion ends, with Jones now on Dyson's feet, his shoulders have touched the ground and, therefore, the game is over. Had Dyson scored and extra points had been converted, it would be the first Super Bowl to go into overtime; less than 17 years later, the first Super Bowl that went into overtime actually happened. Or, if Dyson scored a goal, the Titans could have tried a 2 point conversion for an immediate victory.

Considering the size of the Super Bowl, and the wild game that preceded it, "The Tackle" is regarded as one of the greatest and most exciting final games in modern NFL history. The image of Dyson stretching the ball towards the goal line with Jones wrapped around has been the subject of the NFL's attention. ESPN.com rated "The Tackle" as the 35th greatest moment for the last 25 years in sport (in 2007). NFL.com ranked Jones' tackle Dyson as the fourth greatest clutch moment in Super Bowl history. Fox Sports placed The Tackle as The Greatest Clutch Play in Super Bowl History (since 2007). Like Dallas Cowboys Larry Brown cornerback, Jones is included in the "Top 10 One-Hit Wonders" list of NFL Networks (Jones is # 10, Brown is # 3), although Jones also reflects Brown in having a solid if otherwise spectacular career outside his Super The heroic bowl.

After game

After the game, many sports authors commented on Warner's rise from unknown reserves to the Super Bowl MVP, but Warner himself was not impressed by him. "How can you be amazed at what you expect you to do?" Warner said. "People think this season is the first time I touch soccer, they do not realize I've been doing this for years - not just at this level, because I never had a chance.Of course, I'm having my tough times, but you do not sit there and say, 'Wow, I pile up groceries five years ago, and look at me now.' You do not think about it, and when you reach something, you know luck has nothing to do with it. "

However, he later told The New York Times: "I guess that's sort of an ending story book. When you think about where I am and where I am now, it seems incredible."

Score box

Statistical overview

Bruce caught 6 bait for 162 yards (3rd highest) and touchdown, averaging 27 yards per catch. Holt has 7 receptions for 109 yards (most often by rookie in Super Bowl) and touchdown. Bruce and Holt became the fourth pair of teammates each having more than 100 meters receiving in the Super Bowl, joining Steelers 'John Stallworth and Lynn Swann in Super Bowl XIII, Bengals' Cris Collinsworth and Dan Ross in Super Bowl XVI, and Redskins, Gary Clark and Art Monk at Super Bowl XXVI.

The sheep who started running back Marshall Faulk was held only by 17 meters, but earned 90 receipts at 5 receptions. McNair set a Super Bowl record for rushing yards by quarterbacks, recording 64 yards at 8 carry. He also completed 22 of 36 bait for 214 yards. George finished the game with 95 yards rushing, 35 yard receiving, and 2 goals. Harris is the top recipient for Tennessee with 7 catches for 64 yards. Mason returned 5 kickoffs for 122 yards, and caught 2 tickets for 18 yards.

Rams coach Dick Vermeil became the oldest coach ever to win the Super Bowl (age 63). He also set a record for the longest time between going to his first Super Bowl (Super Bowl XV in the 1980 season) to win it for the first time.

This is the second, and to date, the newest, Super Bowl where the two teams have not made a switch. The only other Super Bowl available today is the Super Bowl XXV.
