An affogato (Italian for "drowned") is Italian coffee-based dessert. Usually take the form of a scoop of vanilla ice cream or ice cream topped or "drowned" with a hot espresso shot. Some variations also include amaretto, Bicerin, or other liquor.

Although restaurants and cafes in Italy categorize affogatoes as desserts, some restaurants and cafes outside Italy categorize them as beverages. Sometimes, coconut, berries, bee hives and some ice cream flavors are added.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary , "affogato" entered English in 1992.

While the recipe of affogato is more or less standard in Italy, consisting of a scoop of vanilla gelato on it with a shot of espresso, variations exist in European and American restaurants. Chef Jamie Oliver suggests using a scoop of vanilla ice cream sprinkled with baked almonds, amaretti biscuits or biscotti, which is doused with pecan and grilled Arabica coffee. She also advises to put the rest of the Christmas desserts like chocolate mousse, tart cake, cake or pudding under a scoop of ice cream.
