Pacific Union College (PUC) is a private liberal arts college located in Napa Valley, California. The campus is located in the upper valley town of Angwin, eight miles north of St. John's. Helena, California and in the Howell Mountain winery. This is the only four-year college in Napa County. This is one of the top ten companies in this county. A coeducational housing college, serving almost exclusively students, the majority of who live on campus.
PUC is fully accredited by the Association of Western Colleges and Colleges and maintains various program accreditations. It is affiliated with the Adventist Church. It is the 12th university or university founded in the state of California. Enrollment at Pacific Union College is approximately 1,600. Students learn various courses offered by 20 academic departments of the school. The school offers approximately 70 undergraduate programs and one master's program. The campus occupies 150 hectares (0.61 km 2 ) of 1,900 acres (7.7 km km) on the property.

Histori
Pacific Union College has a total of twenty-three presidents. The first eight of these were presented while school was still in Healdsburg. In 1983, Malcolm Maxwell became the first alumni to lead PUC, serving for 18 years. Bob Cushman, current president, took office in July 2017 after serving as an academic dean at Walla Walla University.
Pacific Union College was founded as a Healdsburg Academy in 1882 in Healdsburg, California in northern Sonoma County. It was renamed Healdsburg College in 1899. Sidney Brownsberger was his first President. It is the twelfth-tallest institute of higher education in the state of California, and the second was founded by the Adventist Church, first west of the Mississippi River.
In 1909, the college moved to its current location in Angwin, at Howell Mountain in Napa County, where the school had purchased the $ 60,000 Angwin Resort for 1,636-acre. One of the reasons for moving to Angwin Resort is the beautiful countryside setting, overlooking the wine country of Napa Valley in California, which continues to be the hallmark.
In 1933, Pacific Union College became the first higher education institution affiliated with the Adventist Church to achieve regional accreditation when granted accreditation by the Northwest Association of Secondary and Higher Schools. The previous year, PUC has become the first school to receive denomination accreditation. Pacific Union College is also the first Adventist school to form international affiliations; it is affiliated with what is now Avondale College in Australia in 1954.
In 2006 the faculty, administration and the Supervisory Board underscored PUC's commitment to undergraduate education by making a formal decision to remain a college and not changing its name to a university, as other small private colleges have done. This decision is based on institutional commitment to the teaching of qualified liberal arts scholars.
In the summer of 2006, the PUC Supervisory Board announced its intention to enlarge its contribution through the sale and development of a portion of its land ownership into a village. The initial plan called for 591 homes and repairs for local businesses and stores. In response to public input, the number of proposed units was subsequently reduced by 200, to 391. The plan was abandoned in October 2010.
In early 2014, there was controversy when the old department's chair announced his resignation in response to president Heather Knight, preparing to remove the 26-year-old professor in his department for "a lecture on sex that the administrator said clashed with the teachings of the church." His action was seen as a reinterpretation of the policy schools about academic freedom that were previously interpreted to allow for variations of church teaching. Knight drew his threat to fire the professor but "doubled" the reinterpretation of his academic freedom despite major criticism from faculty, students and alumni.
The academic dean of Nancy Lecourt stated that the conflict stems from the tension between the school's commitment to promoting the church and the freedom of professors to teach, stating, "How do we make students think? We poke them, we introduce them to new ideas, and we ask questions it's hard... But how do we make them think without losing their trust? "After a re-evaluation of the school of academic freedom, a professor, Greg Schneider, stated," It's ruining the fabric [academic school focus], and it will take some retweet. " Schneider, who has been teaching in PUC for 37 years, plans to retire soon and ask, rhetorically, "Still, with all my being, can communicate with my students that this is where you should be?"
In June 2014, the College received an unlimited donation of 2.4 million dollars from the local population. It was described as the biggest cash prize in college history.

Curriculum
The Pacific Union College School offers over 70 undergraduate majors and one master's program, across 20 academic departments. Schools operate within a quarter-hour academic calendar.
PUC offers a number of unique class offerings. In 2014, colleges offer the "Star Trek Psychology" course, which explores the psychological topics through the Star Trek series. Some are taught abroad including courses in "Sex Trades in Kolkata, India" taught in India, a class of tropical biology taught from boats on the Amazon River, a yearly foreign study tour led by professors in the history department, the annual Honors Program course summer in Italy, among others.
PUC requires students to choose from a range of fitness classes as part of the general education curriculum. Offers include fencing, trikke, pickleball, swimming, water aerobics, polo, canoeing, skiing, snowboarding, soccer, dance, yoga, and more.
Several departments at Pacific Union College require students to apply for a senior thesis project to complete their degree. Studying abroad is also a requirement in many programs.
Honors Program
Pacific Union College offers Honors Programs to outstanding students who emulate a good book's curriculum. This program replaces the general education curriculum with a series of seminars that study great books. Students in this program participate in a fully paid study tour in Florence, Italy, before their first year as part of a seminar that studies the definition of beauty centered around Renaissance Art. Students in this program are required to complete a senior capstone project.

The USA. News and World Reports put Pacific Union College into one of the "Peak Schools" in the Western Baccalaureate Colleges category for 17 consecutive years until 2010. 2011, USA. News initiates Pacific Union College rankings as National Liberal Arts College. USA. News also ranks second among the liberal arts colleges for diversity, after La Sierra University.
In 2012, Pacific Union College was named the Most Beautiful College in America by Newsweek and The Daily Beast . This rating reflects student attractiveness data, weather measured by the number of sunny days per year and the region comfort index, which measures the humidity and temperature of the afternoon, and the aesthetics of the campus and the surrounding area.
PUC was ranked # 125 out of 1,164 overall by Niche, a popular college ranking site. It is ranked # 13 in the state of California.
College Prowler also places Pacific Union College as the top school in a number of categories as of January 2012. Ranking is based on surveys conducted by current students at school. College Prowler's athletic ranking intramural Pacific Union College first out of 932 school rankings as well as academic advisors and student friendly (of both sexes). Accreditation
Pacific Union College is fully accredited by the Western School and Colleges Association (WASC), a regional accrediting body recognized by the US Department of Education for its territory. In August 2011, after a six-year review process, WASC "confers Pacific Union College accreditation without going through 2018." The college was first accredited by the WASC in 1951.
In addition to WASC-wide institutional accreditation, many PUC programs and departments are accredited by their program accrediting bodies. These include the Department of Music and the Paulin Center for Creative Arts accredited by the National Music School Association, the Department of Business Administration and Economics which has been accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education since 2002, when it became the only Adventist college to receive such accreditation; The Department of Education accredited by the California Commission on Master's Credentials, the Department of Nursing is accredited by the Accreditation Commission of the National League for Nursing and the State Board of California, and the Social Work Program, which has been accredited since 1982 by the Council on Social Work Education.
Campus and facilities
The college is located in Angwin, on Howell Mountain over the Napa Valley, 70 miles (110 km) north of San Francisco, 60 miles (85 km) from the Pacific Ocean, and 180 miles (290 m) southwest of the ski resorts in Truckee Lake Tahoe. The main campus is around 150 acres (0.61 km 2 ) of the 1,900 acre campus property (7.7 km 2 ). The school has more than 30 miles of hiking and cycling trails on the remaining properties.
Thirteen wineries are located in or near the town of Angwin, many of which offer tours and tasting.
During the summer of 2011, PUC updated the interior and exterior of the Nelson Memorial Library for over a million dollars. The previous winter, Pacific Union College renovated Dining Commons, a major center of student life, in a "rural yet contemporary aesthetics" style of the Napa Valley. The hotel's restaurant at PUC serves vegetarian and vegan menus exclusively in socially responsible ways.
Pacific Union College also operates non-traditional learning programs at off-site locations including Yuba Community College in Clearlake, California, Travis Air Force Base and in Napa City.
Albion Field Station
The Albion Field Station, in Mendocino County on the Pacific coast and Albion River is owned and operated by Pacific Union College. The station is designed for educational purposes, tidal pools, estuaries and diverse fauna that offer the ideal learning opportunities.
Angwin-Parrett Field
Pacific Union College owns and operates Angwin-Parrett Field, a public airport located on its campus. The airport was the landing site during George W. Bush's presidential visit to Napa Valley in 2006. The airport also supports PUC's in-flight science degree and offers elementary school and flight instruction to the public.
back40
Many of the 1,900 acre schools (7.7 km 2 ) in the property have not been developed and are known as 'back40' where the wide network of pathways is maintained. Two annual bike races are held: The Napa Valley Dirt Classic [3] and Howell Mountain Challenge [4]. Two lines, Angwin to Angwish [5] and Napa Valley Off-Road Triathlon [6], occur annually in 'back40'.
The 2009 Tour of California, an international road race entirely contained within California, drove through PUC.
Pacific Union College Church
Pacific Union College Church is a campus church, built in 1968. It has 1,800 members in addition to PUC students. The church houses the Pacific Union College pipeline built by Rieger Orgelbau of Austria and was installed in 1981. The church compound also has a classroom for theological and home-office classes of the PUC Office of Service, Judicature and Mission.
Paulin Hall
Paulin Hall is the home of the Pacific Union College's music department as well as the Paulin Creative Arts Center, which offers enrichment classes to communities taught by music and art faculty. Paulin Hall regularly hosts about 10 concerts a year featuring guest appearances and guest artists from around the world.
Rasmussen Art Gallery
Rasmussen Art Gallery, located in the heart of the Union Union College campus mall, offers students and communities a cultural dimension that is stimulating and enriching in the visual arts. The gallery exhibition provides an exposure to contemporary works as well as significant historical art. This gallery organizes six performances each school year and features work from invited artists as well as from faculty and students. Previous exhibitions include artists such as Vernon Nye, Pirkle Jones, John Maxon, Nathan Greene, Arminee Chahbazian, Earl Thollander, and other hosts. This gallery is managed by the fine arts department. Gallery opened regularly at 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday during the exhibition. Entrance gallery is free for public.
Student life
Pacific Union College's stated focus is on undergraduate education. In autumn 2011, 1,567 students are enrolled in PUC. As a residential college, most of these students live in one of seven dormitories on campus or school-owned apartments.
Diversity
Pacific Union College embraces diversity as part of its mission and as a prerequisite for liberal arts education. In its Declaration of Diversity, Pacific Union College states that it understands diversity to include the aspects contained in the WASC Diversity Statement: race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, gender, age, religious belief, sexual orientation and disability. It further said that PUC supported the campus climate "sincere appreciation, not just tolerance, for community members representing human diversity."
The US. News & amp; World Report rated the second Pacific Union College of 219 National Liberal Arts Colleges for Campus Ethnic Diversity. It also places PUC as the 100th National Liberal Arts College for Economic Diversity and Most of the International Students.
In May 2013, a story in the school students' newspaper, Chronicle Campus , reported the non-religious population in the school. He notes that although the student population "often identifies as a religion," the official count that only 1.1% of students identifying as non-theistic might downplay the numbers. The college is home to an active Secular Student Alliance "for atheists, agnostics, nontheists, humanists, skeptics, free thinkers and other non-religious students." The club states that "there is a large and growing non-theistic population on campus" and that it aims "to represent the undergraduate population at PUC while articulating our secular world view and rejection of higher forces to the student body."
Student Association
The Pacific Union Student Association (PUCSA) started in 1887, just five years after the college was founded. It consists of the executive branch and the Student Senate. Publication of PUCSA funds from school papers, directory of Campus Chronicle , Funnybook , and yearbook, Diogenes Lantern . Recently, Funnybook stopped print publications and is now accessible exclusively through its website.
Student organization
There are more than 50 clubs, Honor Associations and Student Ministries active on campus at Pacific Union College. These include the Secular Student Alliance [7], Biology Club, Asian Student Association, Pre-Med Club, Korean Adventist Student Association, Dramatic Arts Society, Music Symposium Art, Ministry of Homeless, Psi Chi, Democratic College and others. In addition to Campus Chronicle , there are some other periodically managed publications, Quicksilver .
REVO PUC
In 2008, Pacific Union College students established the first campus branch of REVO, an international philanthropic movement. This is a philanthropic organization run by Pacific Union College students and chooses an excuse every year to support fundraising and awareness events. During its inaugural year (2008-2009 school year), REVO raised more than $ 10,000 for shelters and vocational centers for trafficked and abused children in Lima, Peru, during the 2009-2010 school year, he raised money for Napa Valley Food Bank. Groups for LGBTQ students
The gay-straight Alliance, GASP (Gay and Straight People) , has been operating on campus since 2008. According to his blog, serving "lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and freaky ( LGBTQ ) students on campus "and is open to students and faculty who want to become more familiar with the challenges faced by LGBTQ individuals. The club is supported by a college president who meets regularly with his officers.
SafePlace is a program run by a network of faculty members whose members are committed to willingness to engage in safe, supportive, and private conversations with LGBT students. Members signify their participation by placing double-triangle symbols on their office doors. In 2012, the Student Senate issues a "Safe Place Policy Rules" that will formalize the program through the Student Association. The bill was vetoed by college president Heather J. Knight who argued that the government's aim was to make "every place on the PUC campus a safe place for students who are interested in same sex" and that the bill implies "that there is indeed a place in PUC that is not safe for students interested in same-sex. " OurPlace , a special group for LGBT students, also operates. Recent efforts by the student government have led to the planning of government sponsored support programs for LGBT students.
Athletics
Pioneers Athletics
The Pacific Union College team, dubbed athletic as Pioneer, is part of the National Association of Space Athletes (NAIA), mainly competing in the Pacific Conference of California (CalPac). Men's sports include basketball, cross-country and soccer; while women's sports include basketball, cross country and volleyball.
PUC has been awarded the "California Pacific Conference Team Sportsmanship Award" five times since 2003, most recently for the 2010-11 school year. In the fall of 2011, coaches for women varsity and men's football volleyball described it as "rebuilding" time. This award signifies a school that features outstanding sportsmanship and exemplifies the true spirit of the "Champions of Character" program set by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Intramurals
PUC maintains an active intramural athletic program under the name RecRadio.org. [8] The intramural athletic program is the top intramural athletic program in that country according to the "Best Intramural Sports Best" rating from College Prowler.
Alumni
Pacific Union College has produced a large number of leading alumni for schools of its size. It has been noted as "the training venue for a large number of outstanding doctors, dentists, nurses, teachers and theologians" who are part of more than 50,000 alumni. Famous PUC alumni include members of the United States Congress and the California State Assembly; a Harlem Renaissance poet, a professional jazz sax player, and others in the arts; several Presidents of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, judges, founders of Loma Linda University Medical Center, Advent Glendale Medical Center, and Advent Glendale Hospital; president of many higher education institutions including the University of Houston. Famous alumni also include many scientists, professors, television figures and surgeons in the Imperial Japanese Army.
