1,1,1,2,3,3,3-Heptafluoropropane , also called heptafluoropropane , FM200 , HFC-227 or HFC-227ea (ISO name), as well as apaflurane (INN), is a colorless and odorless carbon halogen gas commonly used as a gas fire suppression agent.

Use
HFC-227ea finds use in fire suppression systems in data processing and telecommunication facilities, and in the protection of many flammable liquids and gases. HFC-227ea is included in the Clean Agent category and governed by NFPA 2001 - Standards for Fire Agency Cleaning System. Effective fire suppression requires the introduction of HFC-227ea concentrations between 6.25% and 9% depending on the hazard suppressed. NOAEL level for cardiac sensitization is 9%. The US Environmental Protection Agency allows a 9% volume concentration in occupied space without mandatory out time, or up to 10.5% for a limited time. Most fire suppression systems are designed to provide concentrations of 6.25-9%.
The HFC-227ea fire suppression agent is the first ozone-depleting substitute for Halon 1301. In addition, HFC-227ea leaves no residue on valuable equipment after disposal.
HFC-227ea does not contain chlorine or bromine atoms, there is no effect of ozone depletion. Its atmospheric lifetime is estimated between 31 and 42 years. It leaves no residue or oily precipitate and can be removed by ventilation from the affected chamber.
As an aerosol propellant, HFC-227ea is used in a pharmaceutical inhaled dose inhaler as used to disperse the asthma medication.
Security
At high temperatures, heptafluoropropane will break down and produce hydrogen fluoride. This can be observed as the presence of a sharp, sharp odor, which can be felt in concentrations well below dangerous levels. Other decomposition products include carbonyl fluoride, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Before reentering the space where the HFC-227ea system has been activated to suppress fire, the atmosphere must be tested. Acid Recovering Additives added to heptafluoropropane can reduce the amount of hydrogen fluoride. Contact with HFC-227ea liquid may cause frostbite.
Climate change considerations
Heptafluoropropane (HFC-227ea) contributes to climate change. It has a global warming potential of 3,220.
