Stopping an athlete's number is an honor the team gives the player, usually after the player leaves the team, retires from the sport, or dies. After the retirement number, there is no future player of the team who can put the number on their uniform, unless the player gets the permit; However, in many cases, the number can not be used at all. All league recall
Jackie Robinson, the first black player in the modern era of Major League Baseball, has player number 42 who retired in the league in 1997. Following the death of Wouter Weylandt in the 2011 Giro d'Italia cycle race, the organizers decided that they would not re-establish Weylandt 108's bib number in the next edition of the race.
