History and projects
Simon Bedwell and John Russell spent several years at sporadic art events and 'just' mailout-only events in the years after leaving St. Louis. Martins artschool, then in 1991 organized their first proper performance, with fellow former St Martins friend Dino Demosthenous, at a former Barclays in Lewisham Way, South London; This is where BANK comes from. Demosthenous Dino was left in 1992. In 1993, Russell and Bedwell joined Milly Thompson, David Burrows and Andrew Williamson (Bedwell, Burrows and Williamson had worked sporadically for the previous 2 years, with performances at Richard Demarco Edinburgh's gallery, and Clove 2, London). Burrows left the BANK in 1995, Williamson in 1998, Russell in 2000. When Gallerie Poo Poo's own gallery, closed after a three-day press release in January 1999, the group began to show their collective work in other places : Mayor Gallery, London, Magasin 4, Bregenz, Rupert Goldsworthy Gallery, New York, Anthony Wilkinson Gallery, London, Chapman FineARTS, London, Suburban, Chicago, and finally premiere at the Store, London, after Milly Thompson and Simon Bedwell start work separately as an artist while managing the BANK archives. BANK's works continue to circulate in exhibitions in Britain and abroad, most recently in The Banquet Years, a mini-retrospective at MOT International, London, which now represents the 'estate' of BANK as well as Bedwell and Russell.
BANK's contribution to British contemporary art is a series of curated group performances, often with funny, and sometimes offensive titles. As a group they adopted an aggressive attitude toward mainstream contemporary art flows at the time.
Approximately twenty events curated by BANK include the work of BANK artists in addition to the work of several Turner Prize nominees and future winners. Although BANK exhibits were mostly held in the warehouse spaces at Curtain Road, then Underwood Street (both Shoreditch, London) changed the gallery name. Originally was BANKSPACE, then DOG, and finally Gallerie Poo-Poo. Various works of art are tied together, through polemic letters, deliberately favoring a hierarchical and radical display method, in a single broad installation with a tendency for what then looks like visual roughness.
BANK also publishes a satirical magazine that conveys a tabloid style critique of the art world. The headlines include, "YOUR AD MAN IS A BAD MAN," and, "ALL TYPES OF GIGERY HAVE BY PEOPLE '." Another "teenage" headline is "ASS COUNCIL", "SIMON PATTERSON - ONE IDEE, EIGHT YEARS", "CALL TURNED", "PIPPA-LOTTA-RIST-ACTION" and "SAM-TAYLOR WOULD-NOT" 34 This tabloid, along with the Fax-Back project - where the gallery press release is returned to the gallery with corrections and comments - has since become a famous work of BANK.
Julian Stallabrass describes the activities of the BANK as "the creation of a parodic corporate identity at its center (as the name implies) is a noisy and constant reference to the things the ordinarily art world usually says: money." They, according to Matthew Collings, have an attitude of "sour, self-destructive, self-conscious, introspective - combined... with critical intelligence and talent for finding weaknesses in the art system".
