Listening to Prozac: A Psychiatrist Exploring Antidepressant Medication and Remaking Yourself is a book written by psychiatrist Peter D. Kramer. Written in 1993, this book discusses how Prozac's progressive anti-depressant drugs can change the way we look at the personality, the relationship between neurology and personality.
Kramer coined the phrase "Cosmetic pharmacology", and in this book he discusses philosophical, ethical, and social consequences using psychopharmacology to change one's personality. He asks if it is ethically defensible to treat a healthy individual to, for example, help her to rise in a career, or on the other hand, if ethically defended to deny it that possibility. Listening to Prozac spent 4 months on the New York Times best seller list and his influence prompted critics to write books with similar names like "Talking Back to Prozac"
Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel described the books as "one of the most provocative popular science books published in 1993," which states that "Kramer is in full control of knowledge - from cellular biology to animal studies to literature - which he describes for putting the antidepressant effect in perspective. In his hands, ancient ideas suddenly seemed vital again, thrown in a new and disturbing light by Prozac. "
In a review in the New York Review of Books, Sherwin B. Nuland said that Kramer has "played fast and loose with the most basic principles in which doctors evaluate clinical experience and propose new ways to explain or treat illness. requires (1) careful and personal observation of a maladaptive disease or state, (2) a review of all related publications containing the problem, (3) careful attention to every fragment of clinical evidence, whether it supports or does not support the development of observers of hypotheses, and (4) a commitment not to speculate beyond what is justified by the accumulation of data and the implications that can be supported. "Nuland said that Kramer has used his preliminary observations to make unwarranted statements in trade books and in events. TV shows, organized by professional publishers. Kramer responded to this review, stating that Nuland "constantly builds his bona fides as an old-fashioned physician (trained by Dr. Bean who seems to be smart, familiar with serotonin stories, etc., etc.) - and then fails to describe his attacks with one specific. "
The Kirkus Review describes Listening to Prozac as "a wise question supported by case histories and reports of recent research.... A prudent and persistent examination of the consequences for society - and for individuals - when the capsule replaces the sofa."
Daniel X. Freedman, former president of the American Psychiatric Association, wrote that Listening to Prozac "does not provide reliable guidance for those who have difficulty finding themselves or those seeking a clear introduction to brain science and pharmacology."
